QUARTERFINALS: AQUINAS 8 - BRIGHTON 1 WIN

Aquinas started the scoring early in the first period when (Sophomore) Jeff Hackshaw picked up a rebound all alone in front scoring his first varsity goal at 2:07 of the period. Jeff was in perfect position to pick up the loose puck after Cameron Corsaro fed Bernie Gauthier who's shot on goal was stopped and Jeff scored off the rebound. With Aquinas holding a 1-0 lead, Jordan Winnicki (Aquinas) was called for a tripping penalty at 11:51 of the first. Five seconds later Dan Schuler and Sean Hickey forced Brighton to turn the puck over in the neutral zone and Sean Hickey gave Dan Schuler a perfect pass and Dan out worked 2 defenders and gave Aquinas a 2-0 lead.  Rookie (Sophomore Forward) Bernie Gauthier who had one of his best games this year totaling 5 points in the game (2goals, 3 assists) was hauled down as he want in on a breakaway and a penalty shot was called.  The referee came to the bench and asked if i wanted the penalty shot or have a man down for a minute and a half.  I looked over at Bernie and said go ahead it's yours.  Bernie scored to give Aquinas a 3-0 lead at 13:14 of the period. Twenty one seconds later (Sophomore Forward) Tyler Edwards scored the first of his 3 goal performance to Give the Li'l Irish a 4-0 lead with an assist from Gauthier. With 52 seconds left in the period  Tyler found the net again with an assist from Matt McGuire to end the period with Aquinas in a comfortable lead at 5-0.

Start of the second period Tyler Edwards at 2:28 scored his 3rd goal of the game with an assist from (Junior Defensemen) Ethan Ross and Bernie Gauthier to give Aquinas a 6-0 lead. Aquinas started to get into penalty trouble for the next 8 - 9 minutes in the period, We definitely started to loose focus with our undisciplined penalties. It showed with Brighton out shooting us for the second period 19-9.  In that time Aquinas's 1st Team All- Star Goalie Terry Shafer had to be brilliant to keep the comfortable lead in tack. Terry made some incredible saves. When Terry's on his game it has the players staying so focused throughout.  This point of the season is where Terry really bears down and knows what he has to do for our young team to be successful.   I put alot of pressure on Terry at times, and he handles it well.  Brighton did find the net at 10:26 of the second when Garrett Hoffman broke the shut out. Thirty seconds later Bernie Gauthier finished his 5 points with an assist from Tyler Edwards and Matt McGuire to give Aquinas a 7-1 lead.  The newly formed line of Edwards, Gauthier and McGuire totalled 11 points for the game.  At the beginning of the week i decided to change some lines around, I've told the boys before to win a championship you have to have 2 - 3 lines score. The changes worked this time, All 3 lines contributed today. Aquinas finished the scoring in the third period with (Junior Forward) John DiMartino scoring his first varsity goal at 1:40 of the period with an assist from Cameron Corsaro.

Aquinas  Goalie Terry Shafer finished with 30 saves and Brighton's Bracket Bourne had 5 saves and Emmett Butler had 19 saves.

AQUINAS 0 - IRONDEQUOIT 2 LOSS

Aquinas ends regular season with a loss to Irondequoit 2-0.  Irondequoit used 2 power play goals and solid goaltending to end Aquinas unbeaten divisional season. Aquinas won the West Division with a 13-1 record with Greece Thunder finished second at 12-2. Irondequoit started the scoring at 3:18 of the second period on the power play when Mitch Clark scored off a shot from John Padulo to give IHS a 1-0. Aquinas came close a couple of times but Irondequoit's goalie Brendan  Kanaley was perfect stopping all 27 shots Aquinas threw at him. With 6:18 of the second Irondequoit scored it's second power play of the game with Joe Grana scoring with assists from Chris Genrich and John Padulo. Dave Marsala Aquinas goalie also played well he finished with 20 saves. We worked well at times but just couldn't convert on our opportunities. We have a week off so we'll get ready and get prepared for sectionals. I said to the players it's a new season and every team is now 0-0. We can't take any days off we have to work hard each day. Hard work pays off.
Aquinas is 3rd seed in class A and will play Brighton/ER/HFL in the quarterfinal game on Saturday February 16th. Place and time TBD.

Aquinas finished the season 13-1 league record and 17-5-2 overall.

AQUINAS 3 - CHURCHVILLE 0 WIN

Aquinas Win over Churchville gives Aquinas West Division crown. Aquinas 3- Churchville 0.

Matt McGuire (Junior Forward) scored a power play goal in the first period at 3:09 with an assist from Jordan Winnicki (Junior Forward) and Dan Schuler (Sophomore Forward) to give Aquinas a 1-0 lead. After a scoreless second period and the brilliant play of Aquinas standout goalie Terry Shafer. Shaf made 11 saves in the second period when Churchville out muscled and out skated the Li'l Irish in the period. The way my goaltending(Terry Shafer and Dave Marsala) has been this year when were a bit flat they(Shafer and Marsala) keep the score close to give us a chance to rebound during the game.  Terry played exceptional tonight  he made some key saves and finished with 28 saves for his second shutout of the season. Churchville also out shot Aquinas in the third period 12-8 but Aquinas found the back of the net twice. 6:41 in the period  the Li'l Irish scored another power play goal with Jordan Winnicki tipping in a shot from Defensemen Kyle Morabito with an assist from Matt McGuire to give Aquinas a 2 goal lead. Aquinas Sophomore Forward Dan Schuler scored with 33 seconds left with an assist from Matt McGuire into an empty net.

Aquinas was outshot for the game 28-23.

Aquinas league record is 13-0 and Overall is 17-4-2.

AQUINAS 4 - SPENCERPORT 1 WIN

Morabito's goal late in the first period changes Aquinas momentum.

With Spencerport's Donald Daka scoring first at the 8:56 mark of the first period giving his team a 1-0 lead, Kyle Morabito decided to take matters into his own hands with Aquinas coming out a bit flat in the early going. Kyle had the puck behind his own net and raced up the ice untouched and scored with 51 seconds remaining in the first period. Before that goal Spencerport ot worked and outshot Aquinas for the period. Kyle noticed that the team was flat and decided to create something with that play. I'm against my defensemen to carry the puck from one end to the other, but i knew what Kyle was doing when he setup behind the net. He knew we were flat and he decided to try it. It paid off because Aquinas went on to score 3 unanswered goals in the second period to give Aquinas a 4-1 win. With Aquinas on a the power play at 2:38 of the second, Jordan Winnicki(Junior Forward) scored off an assist from Kyle Morabito's shot from the point to give the Li'l Irish a 2-1 lead.  Less than a minute later Sean Hickey scored with an assist from Ethan Ross to make the score 3-1. The last score came from Tyler Edwards(Sophomore Forward) at 7:47 of the second with assists from Dan Schuler and Bernie Gauthier to ice the game at 4-1. Third period was scoreless and Senior Goalie Dave Marsala for Aquinas ended up with 24 saves. Jim Allen Spencerports Goalie had 15 saves.

Aquinas league record is 12-0 and Overall is 16-4-2

AQUINAS 9 - GREECE THUNDER 3 WIN

Aquinas's quick start skates past Thunder for a 9-3 win.

Aquinas jumped to an early 4 goal lead early in the game and held on to beat the Greece Thunder in a divisional game 9-3 at lakeshore. Aquinas started the scoring with Dan Schuler scoring the first of his 3 goals on the Power play with assists from Kyle Morabito and Taylor Carmola to give AQ a lead a 3:16 of the period, Matt McGuire scored to make it 2-0 unassisted Shorthanded goal at 4:53 of the first period. At 6:47 of the first and Aquinas moving the puck well offensively Tyler Edwards(Sophomore Forward) scored the first of his first varsity hat trick to give Aquinas a 3-0 lead. The puck movement by the lines today were just clicking throughout the game. I was very pleased with the way we started. 9:16 in the first Dan Schuler (Sophomore Forward) scored his second of the game with an assist from Matt McGuire to give the Li'l Irish a 4-1 lead with 5 minutes left in the period. Greece answered right back though with a power play goal Phil Lane scored with assists from Joe Friga and Greg Ryan to cut the li'l Irish lead to 4-1. Aquinas with 2 minutes left in the first Ryan O'Shea(Junior Forward) scored with assists from Tristen Ernst (Senior Defenseman) and Sophomore forward Jeff Hackshaw to end the period at 5-1 Aquinas.

The second period started with Greece scoring 29 seconds into the period with a goal from Greg Ryan and assists from Joe Friga and Mike Briganti. At the 2:03 mark again Greece came down the ice and scored to cut the Li'l Irish lead to 2, Brandon Cheeseman scored with an assist from freshman standout Riley Bourbonnais. Aquinas finished the scoring in the second period with Dan Schuler scoring his 3rd goal at 4:19 assisted by Kyle Morabito. The 3rd period was all Aquinas scoring 3 times to clinch the win Tyler Edwards scored on a perfect fed pass from Bernie Gauthier  at 2:11 and then came right back at 3:14 with Matt McGuire scoring with assists from Dan Schuler and Sean Hickey to give Aquinas an 8-3 lead.  Greece had a number of chances but Terry Shafer ( Junior Goalie ) Aquinas's goalie made some terrific saves to keep Greece off guard. Terry played excellent in goal tonight he control his rebounds and didn't give the high powered Greece lineup an opportunity to convert on their chances. Aquinas ended the scoring with Tyler Edwards scoring his 3rd goal of the game with an assist from Bernie Gauthier to make the score 9-3. Tyler's Line of Bernie Gauthier and Jordan Winnicki worked the puck down low well, They cycled the puck perfect giving them time to open up in the slot and getting the scoring chances that gave their line 5 total points.  I kept telling the lines that I'm putting together that we need more production than the line of McGuire, Schuler and Hickey. It sure paid off tonight.

Aquinas outshot Greece 33-27 for the game, Aquinas's League record is 11-0 and 15-4-2 overall, Greece is now 9-2 in the league and 14-4 overall.

AQUINAS 2 - MASSENA 1 WIN

Aquinas 2 game weekend ends in a win vs State ranked Massena 2-1. After playing a young Salmon River team  to a 3-3 tie in their own building, Aquinas found themselves playing State Ranked Massena (5 in the state) the following day at the Red Raider Arena.  Aquinas battled throughout the game in a hard fought contest. Aquinas scored with 3 seconds remaining in the game to give Aquinas a victory and finished 1-0--1 for the weekend. Massena started the scoring in the first period with Anthony O'Green scoring unassisted on a shot that was deflected by Aquinas Goalie Terry Shafer and ended up falling in the net behind him. With Massena leading after one period Aquinas on the Power Play to begin the second period Matt McGuire Junior Forward scored 44 seconds into the period with an assist from Sean Hickey Junior to give Aquinas the equalizer. Shafer in the meantime was playing fantastic in net after 2 periods of play with Massena outshooting  AQ 22-11. In the third period Play going back and forth for the most part of the game Aquinas finally got the break they needed when Sean Hickey  grabbed a loose puck at Massena's blue line and dumped the puck in the corner to a racing Dan Schuler (Sophomore) who picked up the puck went in behind the net and walked out in front of Massena Goalie Kyle Anderson and beat Anderson to his five hole with 3 seconds remaining.  I told the boys after the game that it was an all around good weekend playing 7 periods of Hockey(OT against Salmon) consistently well. I was very proud of the effort this weekend. Were looking forward to a battle with the Thunder on Tuesday Jan 29th, 8pm @ Lakeshore.

Aquinas was out shot for the game with Terry Shafer having 29 saves and Massena's goalie Kyle Anderson having 14 saves, Aquinas overall record is 14-4-2 and Massena 12-4.

AQUINAS 3 - SALMON RIVER 3 TIE

Final Aquinas 3 Salmon River 3 in OT.  Aquinas traveled to Section X to face a young Salmon River team and played very well after being on the bus ride for four hours. Today showed some really disciplined players working hard for 3 periods of play. The last few games we've struggled to put 3 periods together for a complete game. Even though Salmon River came back from a 1 goal deficit early in the game and then tied the game with 3 seconds left i was still very impressed with our play. When you travel out of your comfort zone and play a team that has the fan base in their own building to control the tempo of a game, I was pleased with our play. Aquinas started the scoring in the first period with Sean Hickey scoring an unassisted goal to give Aquinas a 1-0 lead at 12:30 of the period. The period finished with Aq taking a 1-0 lead into the locker room.  17 seconds into the second period Colby Spooner scored on a slapshot just inside the blue line unassisted to give the Li'l Irish a 2-0 lead. 14 seconds later Salmon River got on the board with Marc Plante beating Aquinas Goalie Terry Shafer just inside the left post. Aquinas's lead was 2-1 after 2 periods of hockey.  Both teams played hard in the early going of the third period having some great opportunities to put the game away but both goalies stood tall. At 6:27 of the third Kody Bingham of Salmon River tied the score at 2.  Salmon River gave Aquinas a golden opportunity when Wishe David was called for a Major High Stick on Matt McGuire with 5 minutes left in regulation. Salmon River killed off the major penalty but with 10 seconds left in the game Cameron Corsaro scored from inside the slot area with assists from Dan Schuler and Sean Hickey to give Aquinas a 3-2 lead with 10 seconds left. The following  face-off Salmon River called a time-out.  I told the boys when they came over to the bench to control the draw and just get the puck on the boards. On the face-off Matt Mcguire appeared to win the face-off back to Colby Spooner , but may have hesitated a bit and Salmon River grabbed the loose puck and went in on a scramble in front and scored with 3 seconds left on Terry Shafer.  The Overtime session ended in a 3-3 tie.

Aquinas outshot Salmon River Section X 31-24 in the contest. Aquinas's overall Record is 13-4-2. Salmon River's record is 7-6-3.

AQUINAS 1 - PITTSFORD 5 LOSS

Pittsford dominated the Li'l Irish throughout the game and scoring the first 3 goals on 3 shots in the first period which led Aquinas to Pull starting goalie Terry Shafer. I made the change for one reason and one reason only. I pulled Terry because it wasn't his fault. The boys didn't work together from the start and i didn't feel Terry was responsible for their play.  Pittsford's John Kinsley scored the first 2 goals at the 2:10 mark of the first and then scored his second goal of the game 28 seconds later, Both shots were from the high slot which he was left alone in. A very good player like John will score every time when your left alone in the slot and the goalie has no opportunities to stop those shots. At 8:48 of the first Adam Siebert scored to end the period at 3-0. Second period started with Pittsford again taking control in the offensive zone with Jase Stahlecker scoring at 12:57 of the second with an assist from Nick DiPrima. In the third period Aquinas played a better third period moving the puck a bit better,  Pittsford started the scoring in the third with a goal, His second of the game Jase Stahlecker to give the Panthers a commanding 5-0 lead. Aquinas got on the board at 11:30 of the third with a goal from Dan Schuler.  Aquinas was outshot 25-24 for the game.

AQUINAS 1 - McQUAID 1 TIE

Biggest Rivalry in Sports ends in a tie.  McQuaid Scores early in the third period to Give McQuaid a 1-1 tie With the Li'L Irish at Lakeshore Hockey Arena. All the hype started on track for the game and the players didn't let their Students, Faculty and Parents down playing to a 1-1 tie.  Aquinas started the scoring with a Power Play goal at 6:11 of the second period to give the Li'l Irish a 1-0 lead. Dan Schuler scored the power play goal with assists from Sean Hickey and Kyle Morabito.  Both teams had golden opportunities but the goaltending of Terry Shafer(Aquinas) and Ian Harris(McQuaid) kept the game tight.  In the third period 13:05 in the period McQuaid's Adam Reask scored on the power play with an assist from Sean Knightly to even the score at 1.  Both teams kept working hard, trying to get each other to make a mistake and take advantage of the mistake.  Aquinas nearly had an opportunity to win the game in regulation when Dan Schuler broke in on a breakaway  with 44 seconds left but his shot went wide left. With 2 seconds left in regulation Tyler Edwards won the faceoff back to Bernie Gauthier who then tried to feed Tyler a pass right in front of Ian Harris but Tyler's desperation reached just missed and the game went into OT. Aquinas in Overtime had a 5-3 advantage but couldn't put the puck in the net.  Our Power Play is not been going so good this season i think at times we panic to much on the Power Play because were so young.  I don't have that one player right now that can go out and be the general and run the PP. I know we'll find out it sooner or later. We work on the Power Play daily and at times we get close but it's that one player to run the Power Play I'm waiting for. McQuaid outshot Aquinas for the game 25-24.

AQUINAS 4 - BROCKPORT 0 WIN

Aquinas started the scoring at 8:25 of the first period with a Power Play goal from Taylor Carmola with assists from Klye Morabito and Tyler Edwards to give Aquinas a 1-0 lead. 1 minute later Jordan Winnicki converted a perfect pass from Jeff Hackshaw to give the L'il Irish a 2-0 lead.  With Aquinas taking control of the play in the final seconds of the first period Dan Schuler scored with 43 seconds left in the first with an assist from Captain Sean Hickey to give Aquinas a convincing lead at 3-0 at the end of the 1st period.

Second period Aquinas and Brockport had some good chances but Aquinas's goalie Dave Marsala made some incredible saves to have the 3 goal lead stand, the same went for Brockport Goalie Luke Echias until 1:31 seconds left in the second period Dan Schuler grabbed a pass from Taylor Carmola and beat Eichas to the glove side to end the scoring at 4 giving Aquinas a win.

Senior Goalie Dave Marsala had his second straight shutout for Aquinas making 12 saves for the win. I can turn to Dave and Terry Shafer at any time and know their both ready to give me the solid goaltending that I'm looking for us against tough teams.  Aquinas outshot Brockport 25-12 and now are 10-0 in league play and 13-3 overall.

AQUINAS 4 - HILTON 0 WIN

Jordan Winnicki started the scoring with an assist from Jeff Hackshaw to give Aquinas a 1-0 lead at 8:15 of the first period.  With Aquinas leading 1-0 going into the second period Sean Hickey scored the first of his 2 goals at 2:08 of the second period assisted by Dan Schuler. Sean Hickey scored his second goal of the game at 10:51 of the second period to give Aquinas a 3-0 lead with assists from Tyler Edwards and Dan Schuler. Aquinas's final goal came by Ryan Doherty scoring his first Varsity goal at 6:26 to finish the scoring for the Li'l Irish with assists from Tyler Edwards and Kyle Morabito. Aquinas Senior Goalie Dave Marsala had his second shutout of the season stopping all 18 shots from Hilton. Aquinas outshot Hilton 30-18 for the game

AQUINAS 4 - LIGHTNING 1 WIN

Gauthier's Goal gives Aquinas much needed life in win over the Lightning.

Aquinas and Lightning battled back and forth in the first period to see which team would score first. With 4 seconds left in the period  Matt McGuire scored the first of his 2 goals to give Aquinas a 1-0 to end the first period. The Lightning pressuring Aquinas throughout the first and most of the second, scored a goal from (Senior Captain) Justin Ritzel  with assists from Matt Kommeth and Andy Liddel to tie Aquinas 1-1 at the end of the second. The Lightning outshot Aquinas in the second period 8-5 and Aquinas needed the steady goaltending of Terry Shafer to keep the game close.

At 7:58 of the 3rd period after his line(Gauthier's) being benched for the end of the second period and beginning of the 3rd because of inconsistent play, Bernie Gauthier received a pass from Linemate Cameron Corsaro  just inside the blue line and rifled a shot past Lightning Goalie Steve Jacobe to break the tie and give Aquinas the lead for good at 2-1.  I put some heat on Edwards, Gauthier and Corsaro(linemates) and told them i didn't like the way they were playing in the early stages of the game, I told them they were getting beat on the boards and were losing the 1-1 battles. I gave them another chance and it paid off the gaol Bernie scored was all hard work by that line. At the 9:09 mark of the 3rd and the Lightning getting caught in some penalty trouble Matt McGuire scored his second off the game on the Power Play with Assists from Taylor Carmola and Kyle Morabito. That gave the Li'l Irish a 3-1 lead. 3 minutes later Cameron Corsaro scored with assists from Ethan Ross and Tyler Edwards  to finish the scoring for Aquinas and giving Aquinas a 4-1 win. I'm liking what i see with the goal production from other lines. I keep telling the boys that we have to start looking to balance our scoring and not always looking for McGuire, Schuler and Hickey's line to score.

Aquinas was outshot for the game 24-19 with Terry Shafer making 23 saves and Lightning Goalie Steve Jacobe with 15 saves.

AQUINAS 5 OSWEGO 1 WIN

Aquinas's mini 2 game  loosing streak comes to an end. Aquinas Beats Oswego Buccaneers 5-1 at the Webster  Arena in the Bob Smith Memorial tournament.  Five different players scored tonight to give the Li'l Irish a win. Matt McGuire(Junior Forward) opened the scoring in the first period at 5:09 with an assist from Dan Schuler to take a 1-0. With 48 seconds left in the period Tyler Edwards (Sophomore Forward) was in the high slot and scored with a beautiful wrist shot to beat Oswego goalie Matt Howard with assists from Cameron Corsaro(Junior Forward) and Bernie Gauthier(Sophomore Forward) to give the L'il Irish a 2-0 lead at the end of the first.

With Aquinas starting the second period on the Power Play Dan Schuler(Sophomore Forward) scored 32 seconds in with an assist from Taylor Carmola(Sophomore Defense). With Aquinas working hard in their defensive zone Jeff Hackshaw(Sophomore Forward) received a nice outlet pass from Junior Forward John DiMartino and Jeff started an odd man rush with Jordan Winnicki, Jeff drew a Oswego defensemen over to him and fed a perfect pass to Jordan Winnicki (Junior Forward) who scored to keep the lead going at 4-0. With 0.02 left on the clock in the second period and Aquinas Shorthanded Taylor Carmola intercepted a pass just inside the blue line and scored on a slap shot to give Aquinas a 5-0 lead at the end of the second.  During the intermission i told the boys to keep working on the game plan that we had worked on in our practice the day before, we needed to get back to our speed which is our strong point when were at our best.

The third period went well and we finished strong with 10 shots on goal that period. Oswego's Brett McClelland scored with 3 seconds remaining to finish the scoring.

Aquinas outshot Oswego 28-16 for the game. Terry Shafer Junior Goalie had 15 saves some tough at times to give Aquinas the momentum needed to stay on top. After the game i told the boys that they worked hard throughout the game and stayed with the game plan i asked them to use and it paid off.  When 5 different goal scorers are in a game, that gives you the sense that all the lines were working well together, the puck movement was extremely better than the last 2 loses we had.

AQUINAS 2 - FAIRPORT 4  LOSS

Aquinas lost a tough game 4-2 to a tough Fairport Red Raider team.  Fairport started quick with Trevor Mingoia scoring the first of his 2 goals in the first period,  Trevor scored his second goal at 4:31 of the second period and Ben Herzog finished the scoring on a power play  at 4:49 of the second period to give Fairport a 3 goal lead at 3-0. At that point i decided to pull Terry Shafer (Junior Goalie) and see if the boys would react to the change. Dave Marsala (Senior Goalie) came in and shut the door on Fairport giving up 1 goal in his 2 periods of play. I wanted Dave who was just announced as one of my Captain's for the remaining games of the year to see if he could bring some life into our play. It seemed to work with Aquinas cutting the lead to 3-1 with a goal from Dan Schuler. The period ended at 3-1. I thought we finished the second period a bit on the positive side after a slow start. I told the boys at the intermission that we needed to keep pressuring the Fairport defense to keep the game close. 40 seconds into the third period Cole Bardreau (Fairport) made the score 4-1 and that sealed the victory for the Red Raiders. Dan Schuler finished the scoring with his second goal of the game with 5 minutes to cut the score by 2. Were in a bit of a slump right now but good teams  find  a way to get through them.  If there's any good to the slump, i don't mind it right now, We've played a tough schedule so far with some games being back to back and it's going to happen. We'll stay working on our game plan adjust a few things and stay focused with our up coming games.

Terry Shafer Aquinas's Starting goalie had 10 saves and Senior Goalie Dave Marsala relieved Terry and ended up with 10 saves.  Aquinas's league record is 7-0 and 9-3 overall.

AQUINAS 0 - LIVERPOOL 2 LOSS

Disallowed goal changes outcome of game.

Liverpool beats Aquinas 2-0.  State Ranked Liverpool took advantage of  Aquinas's sloppy play in the early stages of the game and kept Aquinas scoreless the first time this season. The teams seemed evenly matched but Liverpool continued to use the body effectively and kept Aquinas's speed under control. Liverpool outshot Aquinas in the first period 11-5 and again Junior Goalie Terry Shafer gave the L'il Irish the opportunity to keep the game close even when we didn't play well in the first period.  With Sophomore leading scorer Dan Schuler missing the game Liverpool did everything to shut down the speed of the L'il Irish. Dan's Leadership was missed today.  Dan makes things happen when he's here and he gets his linemates to create room in the offensive zone so they have more opportunities. Without Dan you can see that we just couldn't get things going.  Liverpool started the scoring in the second period with Brad Capone scoring at the 8:36 mark. Aquinas still not playing well was able to get something going with 50 seconds left when Tyler Edwards picked up a loose puck just inside the blue line and had his first shot blocked but then was able to get the puck again and this time beat goalie Matt Miller, the goal was disallowed because of Sean Hickey running into the goalie. That goal would have given us a 1-1 tie but instead with the face-off being outside the zone Liverpool had the puck and had an odd man rush and Josh LaRose beat Terry Shafer with 0 time on the clock giving Liverpool a 2-0 lead at the end of the second. Third period ended with Liverpool again not letting up and outshooting Aquinas in the third 10 - 3 and 33-15 for the game.  We had 4 days off with Christmas and i think we were just a bit flat starting. I had a practice the day before the game but even in practice i felt we didn't click on all cylinders.

AQUINAS 8 - CHURCHVILLE 1 WIN

Aquinas Started the scoring with Sean Hickey scoring the first of 2 of his goals with Assists from Matt McGuire and Dan Schuler at 3:39. At 7:47 of the period Sean Hickey scored his second goal of the game on the Power play unassisted. 2 minutes later Tyler Edwards scored to make the game 3-0 at the end of the first period, Freshman Defensemen Scotty Grimshaw assisted on the play.  Second period started and Dan Schuler scored 8 seconds in the period on the Power Play with an assist from Ryan O'Shea. With Aquinas Shorthanded at the 2:16 mark, Dan Schuler stole a puck from a churchville defender and beat goalie Kyle Cavarly top corner.  That put aquinas up 5-0.  2:35 and Churchville still on the power play,  Garrett McMullen scored to cut the lead to 5-1 with assists from Nick Gorino and James Liberi.  With the lead at 5-1 Matt McGuire picked up a loose puck in front of the net and scored with an assist from Colby Spooner. Again Aquinas was shorthanded at 9:18 of the second and 17 seconds later Matt McGuire received a pass from Dan Schuler and went in and scored his second goal of the game to give Aquinas a 7-1 lead. 1 minute later and still shorthanded Aquinas's Ryan O'Shea scored the third shorthanded goal of the night for Aquinas. The score after 2 was Aquinas 8, Churchville 1.  Before the game i was talking to the boys about how the last 3 games we didn't jell like we did in the McQuaid's Bob Schwartz Tournament. I told my line of Schuler, McGuire and Hickey that they needed to get back to moving the puck to each other  in the offensive zone and  not try to do it in an individual way.  I told them if they went back to looking for each other and trying to create open space their line would get a bunch of opportunities.  Their line worked very hard out there tonight having totalled 10 points between the 3 of them.  My 2 other lines are also coming together, they too have started to follow the game plan. I'm building this team on speed, I'm also using my defense as part of the speed with moving up as a full group coming out of the zone.

Terry Shafer Aquinas's Goalie had 14 saves and was relieved by Sophomore Goalie Peter Dohr who had 5 saves in the third period.

AQUINAS 2 - SPENCERPORT 0  WIN

After a big win against rival Greece Thunder, Aquinas came out a bit slow against a disciplined Spencerport hockey team and won a close 2-0 game. I had a feeling that he boys were going to be a bit slower for some reason against Spencerport. Usually when you have a big game against a rival and good team like the Thunder(greece) you kind of just get to relax your next game.  You kind of get locked into the flow of the opponents game. Spencerport coached by ex-Amerk Craig Charron kept his team not making crucial mistakes and having Aquinas just get a 2 goal win. Dan Schuler scored with 46 seconds left in the first period with assists from Matt McGuire and Sean Hickey to give the Li'l Irish a 1-0 lead after one.  Aquinas out shot Spencerport 11-5 in the first. I thought we started pretty well in the first but we just couldn't convert on the rebounds. We didn't work to well in front of the net.  Second Period started and Spencerport started quick in the first couple of minutes with a variety of shots but Senior Goalie David Marsala came up big. David has adjusted fine with his role on the Aquinas Team, He's a leader and he knows when it's his turn to get a start he finishes strong. With a 1 goal lead Matt McGuire scored off a feed from Dan Schuler and Sean Hickey to give Aquinas a 2-0 lead at the end of the period. Third period was scoreless but both teams had opportunities to take advantage but both Goalies stepped up big. Spencerport outshot Aquinas in the 3rd period with a 11-6 edge. The L'il  Irish hung on to secure the win. Senior Goalie David Marsala finished with 24 saves for his first shout out of the season. Jim Allen for Spencerport had 26 saves.

AQUINAS 5 - THUNDER 3 WIN

First period scoreless period, Both teams feeling each other out. Greece Athena took it to us right off the bat with pressuring us and winning every loose puck battle in the period. If it wasn't for Junior Goalie Terry Shafer we may have been in big trouble. Greece outshot the Li'l Irish 12 - 7 in the period.

The second period started with Greece scoring a shorthanded goal at the 1:32. Phil Lane scored unassisted to give Greece a 1-0 lead. 3 minutes later while Greece was getting a line change Tyler Edwards scored his first Varsity goal with an assist from Colby Spooner to give the Li'l Irish a 1-1 tie. Second Period began with the Lightning pressuring Aquinas at the start, Greece took a penalty at 6:37 and Matt McGuire's shot from the point beat Greece goalie Steve Jacobe.  At this point of the game we worked hard to create space on a tough Greece team, I knew our speed had to be at our best because Coach Dossier's team didn't stop hitting us. We needed to open the ice up and when we did it paid off. Cameron Corsaro Junior Forward scored Aquinas's 5th goal and Ryan O'Shea Junior Forward just back from an injury scored his First Varsity Goal to give the Aquinas a 6-0 lead after 2.  I ended up changing some lines before the game to try to create a better balance from my first line to the 4th line. The adjustments worked this time. I had scoring from all four of my lines. Dan Schuler scored his second of the game with 10  minutes left and Jim Buonaugrio scored his 3 rd goal in his last 4 games. Jim is one of my players that works hard everytime he gets the opportunity to get his line out there. He makes the best of his chances.
