I wasn't happy with his play in the Spencerport game last week where we lost in Overtime and i sat him verse Churchville. I had a long talk with Peter and told him if were going to be successful this season he has to be on his game all the time. He responded great tonight, I was very proud how he took control of the game early.

He came up big 2 or 3 times in the first to keep it scoreless then in the second after the saints scoring first he made a big save and we converted that save into a odd man rush that gave us a break and a goal at that point. John Finished with 14 saves and his Varsity win.

Four Minutes later and Aquinas on the power play Starnino and Gauthier found Senior Forward Jordan Winnicki in front of the net and end the period with Aquinas leading after 2 periods 3-0. Jordan has been a key player on the power play for me, He's my pivotal player in front of the net on the power play. Defenders have a tough time clearing him. With a young Oswego team and having trouble handling the body checks they did have a couple of chances to get the buccaneers back in the game but Peter Dohr Aquinas Goalie came up with some critical saves. Aquinas scored their second power play goal in the 3rd period when Bernie Gauthier scored top shelf to secure the win with assists from Kyle Morabito and Anthony Starnino. i made a few adjustments in lines back in the Morrisville Tournament Dec 28 & 29th because of lack of scoring, The line of Starnino, Gauthier and Edwards have contributed 18 points in the last 4 games. Aquinas out shot Oswego for the game 27-15 and Peter earned his second straight shutout.
After a scoreless first period Aquinas finally found the back of the net in the second period with a goal at the 3:57 mark.Junior Forward, Anthony Starnino scored on a pass from Senior Defensemen ,Colby Spooner and Junior Forward, Bernie Gauthier to give the Li'l Irish a 1-0 lead. Both teams battled hard in the game. Aquinas lead in shots after one period 8-4 and continued to keep pressure on Freshman Goalie Josh Opladen (Lightning) throughout the game. Aquinas finished with 31-14 in shots. Opladen played terrific the only goal he let in was a rebound in front after Aquinas kept play in the zone. Aquinas Goalie Junior, Peter Dohr had to make some tough saves out of the 14 he had. Peter made some close range saves when Greece had a 4 minute power play. My Penalty Killers did a nice job today, that kill on the major gave us some hope and Peter making some tough saves gave Aquinas the lead they needed to secure the victory.
Aquinas started the scoring 40 seconds in the first period when Tyler Edwards, Junior Forward was set up perfect in front on the net with assists from Kyle Morabito and Bernie Gauthier to give Aquinas an early 1 goal lead. Bernie Gauthier started the scoring in the second period scoring 24 seconds into the period with assists from Tyler Edwards and Anthony Starnino to give the Irish a 4-0 lead early in the second. We haven't been scoring to much to this point of the season, I've been juggling players around a bit and went with this combination. I made the change with Starnino, Gauthier and Edwards and they quickly found the net. They had 8 points total on their line today against Churchville which resulted in 4 goals and 4 assists. I made the change in our second game of the Morrisville tournament Dec 29th & 30th. We had a very well played game against Williamsville North out shooting them 36-16 and loosing 5-1. The change was needed, I put this line together against CBA of Albany and they produce 5 points in the game and gave us a win to go 1 and 1 for the tourney. I'm hoping this will work it's way down to the other lines so i can have a balance of scorers in the lineup. Aquinas now leading 4-0 after 2 periods outshooting Churchville at this point 24-10 still was in control. Churchville got on the board at 3:45 of the third period to cut Aquinas' lead to 3 Nick Taccone beat Peter Dohr, Aquinas Goalie with assists from Kevin Mahoney and Shawn Easton. Hilton's senior defensemen Matt Fracassi started the scoring with a wrist shot from just inside the blue line to give Hilton an early 1-0 lead. The puck just seemed to find the seam by Aquinas Goalie Peter Dohr. Fracassi's goal was assisted by Corey Gurski and Brian Hurlimann. Out the 15 minutes in the period we controlled play throughout the period, We had the shot lead at 9-4. At the end of the period i told my players even though you control the play in an opponents zone and don't convert things could turn around at any time. Hilton playing tough broke out of the zone and with a quick mistake by the Li'l Irish Hilton's up 1-0.
In the second period Corey Gurski battled hard in front of the net and scored his first of 2 goals to give the Cadets a 2-0 lead at 3:42 of the second period, That goal was assisted by Corey Sherman. Three minutes later Gurski scored his second goal of the game and take a 3-0 lead. We just can't finish right now in the offensive zone were now moving the puck well but still having trouble getting the puck to the net. I couldn't faulty the forwards this time, I tried to go with 2 lines at this point of the game and I think I shouldn't have done this. I have 3 very good lines and to shut one line down early in the second I believe it tired my 2 lines down in the third. I'll look for anything to change the game when things aren't working, but Ii don't think that was the right choice. I always tell my players if your going to be the best in Section 5 you have to have 3 very good lines. Hilton's goalie Senior Dan Hurlimann was excellent. Aquinas Outshot Hilton in the second 15-4 but still trailed. Aquinas did get on the board With 3 seconds remaining in the second when they converted a power play goal by Anthony Starnino with assist from Taylor Carmola and Bernie Gauthier. Hilton's Corey Sherman scored at 6:03 of the third period with an assist from Gurski to give Hilton a comfortable lead at 4-1. After the game I talked to my players I told them I was very proud of the puck movement we had chances tonight, but were still not scoring, we hit 3 posts. I said to them that i can't score goals for them, I told them with the chances we had today will get the breaks sooner than later. I'm not panicking at all i see the hard work in practice. I have a great group of kids out there, They work hard, when the scoring starts Ii know it will be contagious.
Anthony Starnino Junior Forward started the game at 12:48 on a breakaway goal with an assist from Taylor Carmola to give the Li'l Irish an early 1-0 lead. With 10 minutes remaining in the second period Sophmore Forward Tim Young scored on a perfect give and go from Bernie Gauthier and Anthony Starnino to give Aquinas a comfortable lead at the end of 2 at 5-0. I changed some lines around to be a bit more creative, With an injury to senior captain Sean Hickey, I gave Sophmore forward Tim Young an opportunity. Tim's a very smart player and i gave him the opportunity to play with Anthony Starnino and Bernie Gauthier, Tim was able to win important face-offs and also get the puck to Starnino and Gauthier. I started to change some line combinations to see if i can get a few players to jell, It worked tonight. We've had some tough times putting the puck in the net, Adding Tim to the top line gave some life, he won important face-off and gave us the control we needed to keep the puck deep in Brockport's zone. I have been extremely proud of Tim's play as of late. Junior Defensemen, Bob Lorentz scored his first varsity goal for the Li'l Irish with a shot from the point with an assist from Junior Forward Jeff Saraceni at the 2:01 mark of the third. Bernie Gauthier finished the scoring for the Li'l Irish with 30 seconds remaining with assists from Jordan Winnicki and John DiMartino. Brockport scored to break the shut out bid for Peter Dohr(Aquinas Goalie) with 4 seconds remaining, Ian Winner of Brockport scored on a loose puck in front of Peter. Pete has been our back bone so far this season keeping us in the close games and give us the opportunity to get the chance to win. The team pulled together and worked hard to give Peter his first varsity win at Aquinas. Peter didn't get much time in goal last season with MVP Goalie Terry Shafer playing all the games. Peter is showing his strength and giving us the ability to stay in the game until the end. Aquinas out shot Brockport for the game 24 - 23. It's been a tough couple of weeks not scoring goals, I keep telling the boys not to press, when your having trouble scoring you just have to get pucks to the net. I keep telling them to shoot from everywhere and breaks will happen.
In one of the biggest rivalries in high school hockey, Aquinas and McQuaid skated to a 1-1 tie and both teams couldn't score in the overtime session. Aquinas advanced with winning in the shootout and will play Fairport in the Championship game. After a scoreless first period and players from both teams trying to feel their opponents out waiting for the first mistake. The period ended with high intensity from both teams. Aquinas outshot McQ in the period 9-6 but still couldn't get any goals to go. In the intermission I told the boys I could see at times we were still hanging on to the puck a bit longer and not getting great opportunities to score. I told them Ii didn't have to go through the game plan with them because i knew the emotions were taking over. When you see that in your players faces you don't need to say anything they know what they have to do. In the second period both teams were caught in a penalty filled period, Aquinas with 11 penalties and McQuaid with 9. With 1 second remaining in the second period McQuaid's Adam Reask scored a power play goal to give McQuaid a big lead going into the third period. In the second intermission I didn't have to say anything to my players, Senior Captain, Sean Hickey did all the talking to the players. He told them that were a very good team in the third period and not to give up. Do everything possible to get pucks on the net. He reminded his players of our game against Irondequoit how the team came out in the third and dominated play. In the third period Senior Forward, John DiMartino received a perfect pass in front of the net from Junior Forward Anthony Starnino at the 13:29 mark and gave Aquinas the tie at 1-1. Aquinas outshot McQuaid in the overtime session 5-2 but was not able to convert. Aquinas won the shoot out session with Taylor Carmola and Tyler Edwards scoring and McQuaid's Patrick Gerrie and Woody Hudson not being able to get one past Aquinas Goalie Peter Dohr. I'm proud of the boys, I keep telling them that if you keep working hard things will go are way sooner or later. We're still winless in the division but I'll take this game as a big motivator.
Aquinas came back from a 4 goal deficit in the 2rd period to score 3 goals but was unable to get one more to tie the game. Aquinas started the scoring in the first period with a goal from Jordan Winnicki assists by Kyle Morabito and Jake Vogel to give Aquinas an early lead 1-0. At the start of the second period turnovers and sloppy play gave Irondequoit 4 unanswered goals to give the Eagles a 4 -1 lead at the intermission. We fell apart for a bit in the second we threw the puck up the middle twice and handed easy opportunities for Irondequoit to convert on. In the 3rd period Irondequoit again scored quick at 1:40 of the third before Aquinas tried the comeback. I changed things around alot in the locker room at intermission, I decided to try some fresh legs and see if i could wake the boys up. It paid off with a line of Junior Forward Jeff Saraceni, Sophmore Forward Tim Young and Senior Forward Ryan Doherty they came out with fire, Jeff crossed over the blue line and ripped a shot past Irondequoit Goalie Tomas Slezak. Aquinas still trying to come back from being behind by 4 goals scored 40 seconds later with Junior Forward, Tyler Edwards getting his first goal of the season to cut the lead to 2. With 40 seconds remaining in the game and the goaltender pulled Sean Hickey scored a power play goal to Give the Li'l Irish one more chance to score before the end of the game. A questionable call on an ice ruined Aq's chance for a great comeback. Aquinas outshot Irondequoit 29-19 for the game.
The Li'l Irish scored first at 10:42 of the first period when Senior Forward, Jordan Winnicki scored to give the L'il Irish a 1-0 lead with assists from Freshman Jake Vogel and Senior defensemen Ethan Ross. We controlled most of the first period in Saratoga's end but could only get one shot to go in. Were moving the puck very well in the offensive zone but just can't seem to get a lot of shots off. The offense is cycling well but i think were holding onto the puck to long and waiting for the perfect shot instead of just getting the puck on net and getting rebounds to the open man. It's just a matter of time when we get going. Were in a bit of a scoring slump right now but the season is still very young. The defense is keeping us in every game with keeping rebounds away from our Goalie Peter Dohr. Peter is been playing outstanding right now. He's keeping us in every game and that's all you can ask for. In the second period Li'l Irish Senior Forward Ryan O'Shea knocked in a rebound off a shot from Junior Forward , Bernie Gauthier to take an early 2 goal lead at 10:42 of the second period. Three minutes later Saratoga scored a power play goal to cut Aquinas's lead to 1. The period ended with Aquinas leading 2-1 to start the 3rd period. Dohr who stopped 31 shots for Aquinas kept the score at 2-1 for the L'il Irish. Saratoga didn't give up and scored with 39 seconds left in the game and both teams played to a draw in OT. Peter finished with 31 saves for the L'il Irish and was Named MVP for the Tournament game.
Suffern scored 2 power play goals, one in the first period at the 5:15 mark and scored again on the power play in the second period at the 11:00 minute mark to take an early 2 goal lead. Shots after 2 periods were Aquinas 17 Suffern 16. The game was quick paced throughout both team had numerous chances and both goalies played great. Peter Dohr, Aquinas Goalie made a couple of beautiful saves early going and put some life into the team going into the third period. Aquinas took full advantage of the third period out shooting Suffern 13 - 3 and finally breaking the 5 period drought of no goals. During the barrage of shots Suffern Goalie senior, Paul Gabriel made some unbelievable close range saves to keep the score at 2-0 until 2:22 seconds left in the game. Aquinas getting their legs back from the bus ride worked the puck down low continued to crash the net when Jordan Winnicki (Senior Forward) was able to get a pass off to (Freshman Forward) Jake Vogel which turned around and gave a beautiful pass to Senior Forward, Cameron Corsaro who tip the pass behind Paul Gabriel. With Aquinas's goalie pulled in favor of a final attack, Suffern was able to hang on and advance to the championship game against West Genesee in the Wildcats Classic. I was very pleased with what my boys accomplished today. They played a very physical team and showed that we can play with anyone. The goal drought is over, the season is still very young, I've said to the boys when you work as hard and stay disciplined against a team with Suffern's caliber. They can play with anyone in the league. Aquinas outshot Suffern in the game 30-19.
With two key players (Anthony Starnino and Tyler Edwards) missing from the Li'l Irish roster due to injuries Aquinas couldn't find the back of the net verse Athena. Matt Lane scored with 5 minutes left in the first period and that's all Greece needed to secure the victory. We did get some chances early going but we couldn't convert against Parker Bonis (Athena Goalie ) who ended up with 23 saves. We had some early chances on our power play in the first period but just couldn't convert. Our special teams was a bit flat today. Aquinas was 0-5 on the power play. Aquinas Goalie, Peter Dohr(Junior) starting his first Varsity game in goal played extremely well. Peter didn't give Greece to many chances and played like a veteran today. Peter finished with 21 saves for the li'l Irish. We'll have some time to work on our scoring this week in practice. We did get rebound chances but failed to get in position to create an opportunity to score.
