Red Bull Open Ice
This past weekend the Bearded Barracudas won the Red Bull Open Ice pond hockey tournament at Mendon Ponds Park in Pittsford. The team was comprised of four Aquinas hockey alumni, Bobby Dornan, Mike Cerasoli, Greg Lang, and Steve Popham and one Niagara Falls native, David Demizio. The Barracudas went 3-0 during the round-robin play on Saturday and went into Sunday ranked number one. The team had a first round bye during tournament play on Sunday, but kept there unbeaten streak alive when they took to the pond. Winning their first three games on Sunday, the Bearded Barracudas played the second ranked team, Frozen Toes, in the championship game. The final score: 6-5, Barracudas win. Besides making a statement on the local pond hockey scene, the team will be flown to Minneapolis, MN where they will compete in the Red Bull Open Ice World Championship facing off against teams from the United States and Europe, including teams from Finland and Slovenia. The tournament begins mid-morning on Saturday February 20th, with the two best teams in the world playing in the championship game that evening.
